Lieuwe x The Wind Seekers
This collaboration merges two of my passions beyond photography: kitesurfing and design. I was approached by The Wind Seekers to create a one-of-a-kind custom board that would reflect the kinetic spirit of the brand, as well as the dynamic interplay between the Red Sea’s natural elements: sea, sand, wind, and sun. So, I put my camera down for a couple of weeks and sat down to design my very first kiteboard. It was a dream come true!
The rush you get when you create a piece of art that exists in the physical realm is similar to the adrenaline rush you get when doing something extreme. I still get chills seeing the photos of this board being taken for rides on the lagoon and being loved and cherished by its owners.
Below, I will walk you through the creative process I undertook to bring this design to life, and showcase the beautiful work that Mostafa Abbas (founder of The Wind Seekers) and Aris Giannoukos (photographer) did in capturing the board in action.
The Stamp
I created this custom illustration with pen and paper, and it serves as a kind of brand stamp that is featured on merch, as well as on the top of the board.
The Design Process
The design process was far from straightforward. We sketched and explored many concepts. The initial idea was to use an aerial image of the Red Sea, but it didn’t really strike me as anything special…
The Artwork
So I went out on a limb and proposed a piece of digital artwork that set the new direction for the board.
The Final Design
All photos were taken by Aris Giannoukos.
Are you as in love with this board as I am? You can buy it on the official Lieuwe website here.
